What is a Plate Heat Exchanger?

A Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) is a type of heat exchanger that uses metal plates to transfer heat between two fluids. It is highly efficient and compact, making it ideal for applications in HVAC systems, food processing, power plants, chemical industries, and more.

How Does a Plate Heat Exchanger Work?

1. Structure

  • A PHE consists of multiple thin, corrugated metal plates (usually stainless steel) stacked together.

  • These plates are held in a frame and sealed with gaskets or welded in some types.

  • The plates form a series of parallel channels for fluid to flow through.

2. Fluid Flow

  • Two fluids enter the exchanger:

    • One hot

    • One cold

  • The fluids flow in alternating channels: every other channel has hot fluid, and the ones in between have cold fluid.

  • The fluids never mix because they are separated by the metal plates.

3. Heat Transfer

  • Heat is transferred through the metal plates from the hot fluid to the cold fluid.

  • The corrugated design of the plates increases the surface area and induces turbulent flow, improving heat transfer efficiency.
